Judges and Gifts

The Supreme Court persists on retaining a law enabling judges to accept gifts. This is a loophole that should be classified as a form of bribery.

HOW we yearn for a judge who is proud. A judge who can say no to gifts, whether in cash or in kind, ranging from a simple batik shirt to parcels of goodies worth millions of rupiah. Such a proud judge is one who lacks socializing skills. For instance, he would turn down invitations to dine at fine restaurants or receive guests in the privacy of his office. He would also refuse offers to play golf by people not of his profession.
