THIS is another form of mining conflict: companies trying to elbow each other aside. While in other locations, there are open disputes between corporations and local people, the friction between nickel miners in North Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi, is taking place behind closed doors. There is both influence and intervention from powerful people in the center.

The nickel dispute is taking place in the Mandiodo Block, which is spread across three re
