Tuanku Imam Bonjol, in exile in Manado, wrote about his war against the Dutch and his decision to negotiate peace. But no mention was given to the alleged atrocities of his men.

“Here’s a letter from the Company telling me to come and meet the Company now. What do you think, datuk, shall I go or not?”
IMAM Bonjol died in exile in Manado where he wrote a sort of biography in Malay-Arabic script. His sons Naali Sutan Chaniago and Haji Muhammad Amin who joined him in exile managed to keep the manuscript intact.
Bonjol wrote of his war against people who failed to practice Shari’a Islamic law and of his dispatching
