In 1908 some 30 students from the Dutch Indies in Holland set up a social organization to help one another. When processing the permit at the municipality administration, they were asked their nationality, a question that surprised them and set them thinking about what their nationality really was. Until then they usually said they had come from Java, Sumatra, Ambon, Banten and so forth.
