Duplicitous Democracy Fighter?

"Welcome back to the arena of the people's movement, Gus!" says the poet Goenawan Mohammad (August 6).

This statement has made me wonder, "can't somebody lead a democratic movement while being president?" Or, "can't somebody fight for people's interest while being president?" For Indonesia, as attested by Gus Dur himself, it's clear that President Gus Dur was unable to carry out democracy and people's interests with the power vested in him.
