Samuel Huntington has defined civilization as the highest-level grouping of human beings and the most extensive stage of cultural identity distinguishing one social group from another. Today, he said, there are eight civilizations in the world: Western, Confucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic-Orthodox, Latin American and "possibly" African.
