A young man, an unhappy journalist, died at an intersection of Jalan Senen Raya in Jakarta, on a deserted night, March 31, 1973. A motorbike knocked him down. Some homeless people carried his body to a nearby hospital, but he died soon after.

He was unmarried. His parents lived in far-off Madura. He rented a room in a narrow alley in Kebonkacang. It was in this room, a day after his burial, that his seventeen-volume diary was found on his
