The Reclamation rhetoric
THE ongoing reclamation project in Jakarta Bay has triggered controversy in the government. Problems arose after Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan stated publicly that Island G's reclamation could proceed after it had been previously stopped. His stance undermined Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya, who previously said the project failed to meet several environmental regulations.
Through State Secretary Pramono Anung, President Joko Widodo confirmed that all work on reclamation projects, including Island G, must meet all requirements. "Every regulation, stage and process must be fulfilled," he said last Thursday.

Philippines Detains 177 Indonesians
The Philippine government detained 177 Indonesian haj pilgrims at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Friday two weeks ago to check the validity of their passports. A spokesman for the Indonesian foreign ministry, Arrmanatha Nasir, confirmed the reports. "We verified their Indonesian passports," he said in Jakarta last week.
Immigration officials are working with police to investigate the case, which centers on a scheme to send pilgrims to Mecca on fake passports. At least seven travel agents are allegedly involved: Taskiah, Aulad Amin, Aulad Amin Tours Makassar, Shafwa Makassar, Travel Hade El Barde, Guidance Group Haj (KBIH) Arafat and Arafat KBIH Pandaan.

Wanted: Munir Inquiry Results
Suciwati, widow of the late human rights activist Munir Said Thalib, has asked the Central Information Commission (KIP) to summon former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in connection with the results of an investigation into Munir's murder. The inquiry results were delivered to SBY in 2005, "but they still haven't been revealed", Suciwati said on Tuesday last week.
The fact-finding team was formed on the basis of a presidential decree. It stipulates, among other things, that the government announce the inquiry results. Munir was murdered by poison aboard a Garuda flight bound for the Netherlands on September 7, 2004. At an information commission meeting on Tuesday last week, the investigation team's secretary Usman Hamid said SBY had received the final report.
