September 25, 1493Christopher Columbus sets sail from Cadiz, Spain, with a flotilla of 17 ships on his second voyage to the Western Hemisphere. He is accompanied by 13 clerics; Alvarez Chanca, a physician who leaves valuable accounts of the voyage; Juan Ponce de Leon; Juan de la Cosa, a cartographer; and his younger brother Bartholomew.
