December 3, 1984 More than 4,000 people die and 200,000 are injured after gas escapes from a pesticide plant operated by a Union Carbide subsidiary in Bhopal, India. Over the years, according to the Indian government, some 15,000 people have died from effects of the gas.
December 4, 1899 Typhoid vaccine is tested on humans for the first time. A typhoid epidemic struck France during the Napoleonic Wars.
