Rebuilding Villages With Ease

LAST years tsunami disaster in Aceh literally turned hundreds of villages (referred to as gampong) into something akin to giant puddles of mud. It is because of this that village rebuilding is becoming somewhat complicated because of unrelated problems, both between residents as well as between villages. Up to now however, there has been no sign of any serious disputes due to the construction of new villages. The Aceh Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Agency (BRR) is currently trying to get residents to agree to compromise as regards several new villages.

VILLAGE REBUILDING ALTERNATIVES

  • Rebuilding villages as they were before, without any changes. --> not advised.
  • Rebuilding villages as they were before, but with several improvements. -->there have to be safety facilities, channels and common areas.
  • Re-mapping of all or part of village. --> the majority of cases in Aceh fall into this category.
  • Moving to other locations (resettlement) if:
  • Residents do not want to return.
  • Land is under water or has disappea
