ONE cant easily forget the painting stolen from an Oslo museum in 2004. Mid-canvas, in roughly sketched, disturbing lines, is a terrified figure. His face is pale, corpse-like but fetus-like at the same time. His mouth is agape, screaming. His eyes bulge. His hands clutch his ears. He stands on a wooden bridge whose end we cannot see.
