Competition between factions in the Golkar Party became more evident after a gathering organized by Surya Paloh in Medan. Politicians previously united in opposing Akbar Tandjung, now vie for his influence.

THE gathering was held in the ballroom of the Hyatt Hotel, Yogyakarta, on Wednesday night last week. The evening’s host was Surya Paloh, Chairman of the Golkar Party Advisory Board. In attendance were about 50 of the party’s officials from Central Java and Yogyakarta. European-style food was served.
