SEKARMADJI Maridjan Kartosoewirjo was born on January 7, 1907 in Cepu, Central Java—a city with the romantic Bengawan Solo river flowing through it and a teakwood forest surrounding. His father, Kartosoewirjo, head of an opium control division for the Dutch government, named him Sekarmadji Maridjan. Later the father’s name was added to the end of the child’s name.
