Rushing for a New Vaccine

The government is attempting to expedite mass vaccinations to alleviate the pandemic’s great economic burden. Vice President Ma’ruf Amin asks the Indonesian Ulemas Council to quickly issue an edict for the vaccine. But mass vaccinations are being held back by technical issues and inadequate cold chain facilities. Rejection toward the vaccine is emerging in various regions.
THE meeting on the fate of CoronaVac—a Covid-19 vaccine—at the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) on Sunday, January 10, was a contentious one. Members of the National Commission on Drug Evaluation and the BPOM team debated the efficacy of the vaccine produced by Sinovac Biotech Ltd, a Chinese biopharmaceutical company.
