Forced Merger of Research Agencies

The merger of government research agencies into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is causing tension between scientists. BRIN is believed to have veered off its path. The Palace and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle General Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri are reportedly supporting the move by BRIN chairman.

A LETTER addressed to President Joko Widodo, signed by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik, dated November 23, 2021, expressed objection to the integration of Komnas HAM’s research and assessment division into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
