Educators and students of Nurul Haramain Islamic Boarding School in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, have been preserving the environment for years. They restore barren lands, revitalize rivers, and process waste independently.

THE pesantren (Islamic boarding school) looked just like an ecological tourist destination. There were three freshwater fish ponds against a background of rice fields. A chicken and duck farm was tucked in the middle. Shrubs and flowers filled the rest of the space. Across them, on the other side of a small river and connected by a small bridge, were several berugaks or Lombok-style gazebo, each measuring 3 x 6 meters.
