Misbehaving Pharmaceutical Companies Should be Punished

The pharmaceutical industry is in turmoil following the outbreak of acute kidney failure cases. Tempo interviewed Indonesian Pharmaceutical Companies Association Executive Director Elfiano Rizaldi regarding the matter.

THE pharmaceutical industry was shaken when the health ministry banned the sales of syrup medicines on October 18. Syrup medicines are suspected to be behind the sharp increase of cases of acute kidney injury throughout this year. Two days later, the Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) released a list of five medicines indicated to contain ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBE).
