Why Freeport’s Smelter Project Delayed

Freeport Indonesia is pressured to finish the smelter project in Gresik. The project is behind schedule despite the company already obtained the export permit for concentrate.

TWO years have passed since President Joko Widodo pressed the siren button to signal the start of the construction of the Manyar Smelter in Gresik, East Java. Jokowi laid the first stone of the mineral processing facility owned by Freeport Indonesia on October 12, 2021, amid the rampan Covid-19 pandemic. Construction of the smelter building now stands on the Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE) Gresik.
