IN the two years that he has been CEO of Bank Mandiri, Agus Martowardojo made a few brave moves. He publicly announced the 30 biggest uncooperative debtors in the bank. Gradually, the bad reputation that had stuck to the bank began to peel off. The percentage of non-performing loans (NPLs) in this state bank began to decline. He never gave up, even though there were protests by employees who called for his ouster.
