“Paunaro! Paunaro!”
YELLING in delight, the children of the Kamoro tribe flocked around the 17 ground kangaroos that had just arrived in their village. These animals became the guests of the Nayaro villagers, Papua, a fortnight ago. They seemed to be heartily welcomed. The children pointed at the mammals by saying, “Look, those paunaro have tattoos.”
Paunaro is the tribe’s word for kangaroo. In Papuan, this animal is called laulau. T
