THE December 2004 tsunami disaster left at least 300,000 people dead and missing in Aceh province. Such an exceptionally heavy toll was partly due to poor preparedness and mitigation among Aceh residents.

To help address this issue in a sustainable manner, a culture of safety and resilience needed to be developed at all levels of society. The best entry point for such a venture is school communities.
