It may be hard to find an island whose development is as fast as the development that Batam has shown in the past two decades. Increased investments have led to the emergence of factories and skyscrapers as well as the allure of employment opportunities for migrants. Batam’s prosperity, as is true of a developing community elsewhere, has also bred unemployment and poverty, the illegitimate offspring of development.
