KAMALA Shirin Lakhdhir, the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Indonesia, is no stranger to the archipelago. Her early career with the US State Department included a three-year tenure as a staff member at the US Embassy in Jakarta. She arrived starting in 1994, just as Indonesia hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. She quickly became involved in arranging numerous events for President Bill Clinton during his visit.
