The State Intelligence Agency once worked with Panji Gumilang to fight the Indonesian Islamic State. The Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School often becomes a voter base for political parties.

WHEN Abdullah Mahmud Hendropriyono was appointed as the Chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) in August 2001, he immediately prepared a mission to work on Panji Gumilang. Hendropriyono received information that the founder and leader of the Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School in Indramayu, West Java, was recruiting cadres for the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII) through student admissions.
