A local reporter in Central Kalimantan claims three attempts have been made to kill him after he wrote stories about illegal logging and theft of timber, and reported the cases to the government. A legislator in the MPR may be involved, who is regarded as the province's `timber king'.

Abi Kusno Nachran's right hand is still sore. Little surprise. Four of the fingers are missing. He has scars from stitches which cover his back and head. The four fingers were removed with a mandau , the traditional sword used by the Dayaks of Central Kalimantan. These are Abi's reminders of a close shave with death. He says it is his third and it came at the hands of a mob of about 20 people in the town of Pangkalanbun, on Borneo's south coast.
