A taxi driver was allegedly paid Rp60 million to pose as the defendant in a hit-and-run trial. His financier is due for trial in Jambi next week.

The case is just one example of how the law can be bought. Suhendra Setiawan, alias Beben, 36, took the stand at the Jambi District Court as the suspect in a hit-and-run incident. Beben, an `illegal' taxi driver usually operating at Hotel Harisman in Jambi, faces charges of manslaughter for negligently causing the death of another motorist (under Article 359 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment).
