A PROVERB says there is no smoke without fire; life is shaped by cause and effect. In forest fires, there is no fire without human hands. Flames do not simply ignite from the ground.

Professor Bambang Hero Saharjo, a forest protection lecturer at IPB University who has long studied land fires, does not believe that friction among dry leaves can generate flames. He has made this conclusion public to counter a persistent myth among foresters
