LONG before population growth began shaping the course of Indonesia’s development, Sumitro Djojohadikusumo had already reflected on demographic dynamics in his essay Indonesia Toward the Year 2000. Published in the journal Prisma in early April 1975, Sumitro—then serving as Minister of State for Research— outlined a vision for Indonesia through the end of the 20th century.
