The islands of Bangka and Belitung off Sumatra have just become the newest of several new Indonesian provinces. A popular decision there, but could it be a risky one?

In the new provincial capital of Pangkalpinang they held a festival to celebrate, despite the rain. Hundreds of inhabitants of Bangka island’s main town went to the mayor’s office on Tuesday last week, carrying trays laden with rice and side dishes to cheer their new upgraded status. They prayed and ate together. It was a way for the people to give thanks for Bangka and neighboring Belitung islands’ longed for provincial status.
