LAST week, in front of several Muslim clergymen at the Darut Tauhid Sampang Islamic boarding school in Sampang, Madura, Suryadharma Ali began his speech by telling the audience about 'misguided' Islamic teachings. The Religious Affairs Minister offered several examples, from modification of syahadat verses, which declare one's faith in Islam, to creating a new Qur'an with selected verses. He then proposed three ways for dealing with transgressors.
