RONALD (not his real name), was riding his motorcycle cautiously in the slow lane of Jalan Rasuna Said on Kuningan, South Jakarta. He was going at about 40 kilometers an hour. It was past 10pm on that Tuesday night two weeks ago, and the traffic from the direction of Menteng, Central Jakarta, had lightened considerably. The 38-year-old architect observed only a few cars passing him as he headed home.
