The Indonesian military is to turn over its territorial role in the provinces to local governments, without breaking the existing command structure.

Last week's announcement by the TNI that it will turn over its territorial role in the provinces to the local authority is widely welcome as another step forward toward reducing military involvement in civilian affairs.
