The demonstration by the Jakarta Students Alliance was marred by violence. Demonstrations must not be flawed by violence.

DEMONSTRATIONS seem to explode so easily into violence these days. The protests in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) Building and Atma Jaya University last week are further examples of how violence can become a habit. This could damage our fledgling democracy.

These violent demonstrations are distressing. A total of 21 people were hurt, the front fence of the legislative building was torn down and protestors blocked main thoroughfares,
