The government has cancelled the tobacco excise tax increase. The move is a mockery of the commitment to develop human resources.

The government’s decision to cancel the excise tax increase on tobacco products is pathetic. The decision taken on the pretext of creating economic and political stability in 2019 in fact downplays the importance of tax revenues for the state. The hike would have also reflected the government’s commitment to protect the citizens from the deadly effects of smoking besides contributing to the economic growth.
