There is still considerable uncertainty as to whether indigenous people’s rights would be recognized. A legislative initiative is needed.
ALTHOUGH it has been a decade since the Constitutional Court confirmed the rights of indigenous communities to the forests they have lived in for generations, the government has still not designated all customary forests. As of October 2022, the environment and forestry ministry had only designated 148,448 hectares of customary forest for 105 communities.
