Banda is forgotten

He still looks strong, despite the stooping shoulders when he walks. He reads without glasses, swims regularly, and occasionally scuba-dives. That would be nothing unusual except for the fact that the man is 83-year-old Des Alwi, a native son of Banda Naira. He grew up as the  grandson of Said Baadilla, Maluku’s pearl tycoon, but he was adopted by Mohammad Hatta and Sjahrir, revered national heroes, during their exile in Naira by the Dutch
