In the absence of an effective national rapid disaster response system, a number of local administrations in eastern Indonesia have taken the initiative to set up their own networks. In Bantaeng, South Sulawesi, the Rapid Disaster Preparedness Brigade stands ready to handle all kinds of health emergencies in minutes. In Sambas, West Kalimantanan area susceptible to forest firesa well-equipped fire-extinguishing system has been established. In Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, a network of blood donors stands ready at any moment to help out.
