The grand building in the cool city of Bandung was formerly called Societeit de Concordia, a society of `civil harmony' among Dutch East Indies citizens of European stock. When Indonesia became a republic, it was the conference venue of African-Asian leaders (1955), who agreed on the principle of non-alignment.
