One day, maybe right now, we could be Winston—the character under constant surveillance in the novel 1984. In the mornings when he leaves for work at the Ministry of Truth, the huge telescreens in the streets beam out the government’s bright broadcasts about victories in war and achievements in development. The same screen records people in its field of vision.
