I DO not remember exactly. But now I think that day was in February 1948. I was seven. The night before, I had heard adults talking about a ‘cease-fire’; now I realize they must have been talking about the Renville Agreement that attempted to settle the armed conflict between the Kingdom of Holland and the Republic of Indonesia. 

The world knows that this settlement was not honored. But back then, that day did indeed feel calm.
