The sound of dogs barking carried through the darkness that cold, misty morning in Torean. Our footsteps on the rocky dirt road in this hamlet at the foot of Mount Rinjani drew us closer to the dogs, and they began to bark even more loudly. "The dogs help us guard the cornfields, cocoa plantation and cows," said Amak Herni, 56, a local senior porter.
