Lake Paniai: An Ancient Lake

Besides having one of the largest precious metal reserves in the world, the Central Papua Highlands is home to lakes containing millions of cubic meters of fresh water. One of them is Lake Paniai which lies next to Lake Tage, both discovered in 1938 by Dutch pilot Frits Julius Wissel.

The Paniai Lake shore slowly came alive that late October morning with the muffled clamor from dozens of people calling out to one another. The crowd swarming around the port then flocked onto a boat moored at the shore. They seemed to be fixated on a spot on the hillside across the shore.
