Sonya Elly was taken by her mother to Ambon to attend college amid sectarian conflicts taking place in Maluku. She was able to become an accomplished teacher thanks to support from her family.

SONYA Elly’s dream of becoming a teacher began with her mother who wanted to see her dressed in a brown teacher’s uniform, carrying a satchel. “Mama would be so happy to see you wearing an official uniform,” said Yospina Nauwe, Sonya’s mother.
