LAST Friday the general elections bill was passed in a plenary session. Protests immediately followed. "I will make an appeal to test the law," said Crescent Star Party Chairman Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Presidential candidates must be proposed prior to legislative elections, said Yusril, which is why the presidential threshold should not exist.

Two people attacked and killed a North Sumatra police two weeks ago on Sunday. After jumping over the North Sumatra Police Headquarters fence, they stabbed the policeman on duty, Martua Sigalinging, to death. The police named four suspects in this attack, one of whom is Syawaluddin Pakpahan.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has identified Irfan Kurnia Saleh, director of Diratama Jaya Mandiri, as graft suspect in the purchase of one unit AgustaWestland AW 101 helicopter. Irfan was suspected to have manipulated the project, causing state losses. Diratama was a broker in the deal.
