Indonesia's marine territory is about 3.2 million square kilometers in sizeone of the largest in the world. Among its most precious underwater resources are its coral reefs, which make up about 14 percent of the world's reefs. Lamentably, almost one-third of Indonesia's reefs are damaged, mostly caused by human activities. Coral reefs in Bali's Bay of Pemuteran and at Kalasey Beach in Manado are almost totally destroyed. But thanks to the hard work of local residents, the underwater beauty of both areas is slowly being restored. Tempo English reports from Bali and Manado to mark National Maritime Day on August 21.

Indonesia's youth aged 18 to 20 years number about 62 million, 15 times the population of neighboring Singapore. Records show that youths are often the determinants of history, from the 1928 Oath of Youth, which formed the beginnings of the struggle for independence, to the onset of Reformasi in 1998. We present a mosaic report of young people who have committed themselves to doing something about the socio-economic problems in their home areas. In Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), a group of youths are teaching farmers innovative methods of increasing their agricultural products. In Makassar, Sulawesi, young people support forestry projects. And in North Ternate, Maluku, a youth community revives almost extinct traditions of a past sultanate era. Tempo English pays tribute to these brave and dedicated young people and others throughout Indonesia on the occasion of International Youth Day on August 12.

The forests of Halmahera in North Maluku are home to a fabulous wealth of flora and fauna, many of them undiscovered and unidentified. One of these areas is the Akatejewe-Lolobata National Park where 23 species of birds native only to Maluku are found. They attract serious bird watchers who make the long trek to indulge in their hobby. Given the potential to improving local livelihoods, youths in the area have taken the initiative to develop ecotourism, as an alternative money-making project for all stakeholders of the forest. But the governments have not matched the youths’ enthusiasm with the needed political will. The species of fish known as the groupa, grouper or karupa, has long been a source of livelihood for millions of Indonesian fishermen. The price can go as high as its delicious taste, earning a reputation in local and overseas markets. But overfishing and a destructive environment have drastically reduced its numbers to dangerous levels. So, in some areas of the Sulawesi hinterland fishing communities have initiated strict regulations on grouper fishing and created environmentally friendly breeding ponds.
