The conflict in Papua has created a seemingly unending wave of refugees. Several children have died of malnutrition.

NICO Fatem was born underweight on October 27, 2022, in a refugee barrack in Kumurkek, capital of Maybrat Regency  in the Province of Southwest Papua. This was some two weeks before the humanitarian pause—an initiative to stop the conflict and take care of refugees in Papua—was signed on November 11, 2022. Nico was deemed malnourished.
