Sea sand miners stand to make huge profits since the government allows its export. It has the potential to being in the equivalent of hundreds of trillions of rupiah in foreign exchange.
SINCE the export ban on sea sand came into force in 2003, its price has continued to drop. The market is no longer large, and there is an oversupply. Herry Tousa, General Chairman of the Sea Sand Entrepreneurs Association (APPL), gave the example that holders of sea sand mining business permits (IUP) in Pontang, Serang, Banten, can sell sand for just Rp9,000 per cubic meter.
