Fishermen along the northern coast of Tangerang are on the verge of losing their livelihood as a sea barrier is erected. On land, residents are forced to sell their land.

LIVING as a fisherman for more than 20 years, this was the first time that Wana had difficulty finding fish along the coast near his home in Ketapang village, Mauk, Tangerang Regency, Banten. In the sea where Wana and other Ketapang fishermen used to fish, bamboo stakes now form a 30.16-kilometer-long barrier. This ‘sea fence,’ installed about 500 meters from the shoreline, has narrowed the fishing grounds.
