The End of Direct Elections

PRESIDENT Prabowo Subianto’s ambition to change the system for electing regional leaders is just one step away from realization. The House of Representatives (DPR) and the government are preparing to abolish direct elections and replace them with an indirect system this year through a revision of the General Elections Law. If nothing stands in the way, the DPR will begin deliberating the revision after the 2026 legislative session opens.
